  • Multi-Layered Security In Place For Amarnath Yatra: Kashmir Police Chief

V K Birdi visited the Nunwan base camp of the yatra along the Pahalgam axis and reviewed the security arrangements for the pilgrimage which starts July 3.

Multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements have been put in place for the upcoming annual Amarnath Yatra to ensure safe and smooth pilgrimage, Kashmir Police chief V K Birdi said on Wednesday.

“The Shri Amarnath Yatra this year is starting next week. Jammu-Kashmir Police and other security forces have made all security arrangements for the yatra. Compared to last year, this time there are multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements so as to make the yatra safe and smooth,” the inspector general of Kashmir Police told reporters in Anantnag.

Mr Birdi visited the Nunwan base camp of the yatra along the Pahalgam axis and reviewed the security arrangements for the pilgrimage which starts July 3.

The IGP said the security arrangements for the 38-day pilgrimage have been divided into different levels, including zonal, and security drills were held at every level on Wednesday ahead of the yatra.

“The aim of the drills is to refine our alertness, and preparedness of our actions and responses at the time of any contingency. Such drills were conducted at every place like camps, roads or interior sections along the yatra routes so that all the security forces remain alert and know what specific tasks they have to carry out to fight any contingency,” he added.

Asked about the local support to the yatra, Mr Birdi said the yatra cannot be conducted without the support of the local population

“They become successful due to the help and support by the locals. This time also, the people are excited to welcome the yatris and provide them any possible help,” the IGP said.

Meanwhile, security forces conducted drills at Pahalgam, Anantnag, and Qazigund” in south Kashmir; Pantha Chowk in Srinagar, and Sumbal in north Kahsmir’s Bandipora district.

  • 10% Drop In Amarnath Yatra Registration After Pahalgam Attack: J&K Lt Governor

“The pilgrim registration before the April 22 incident was going on at a good pace but after that the registrations decreased. There was a drop of 10.19 per cent in registration compared to last year,” Manoj Sinha told reporters at Raj Bhavan here.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Thursday said there has been a drop of over 10 per cent in pilgrim registration for this year’s Amarnath Yatra in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.

“The pilgrim registration before the April 22 incident was going on at a good pace but after that the registrations decreased. There was a drop of 10.19 per cent in registration compared to last year,” Mr Sinha told reporters at Raj Bhavan here.

The LG said around 2.36 lakh pilgrims had registered for the yatra before the attack took place at Baisaran in Pahalgam area that left 26 persons — mostly tourists — dead.

“The confidence among the pilgrims is returning due to the steps taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Administration and the security forces which has resulted in the registrations picking up again,” he added.

Mr Sinha said the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has launched a process of seeking reverification from the pilgrims who had registered for the yatra before April 22.

“So far, 85000 pilgrims have reconfirmed their registration. We are hoping that the registrations will pick up in the coming days,” he said.

Asked if the terror attack had affected the Amarnath Yatra this year, Mr Sinha said it had affected the entire Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the valley.

The LG said adequate security arrangements have been put in place for the pilgrimage which will start from July 3 and end on August 9.

“There is a three tier security at the base camps while security forces are carrying out area domination and mock drills to meet any eventuality. More police officials and CAPF personnel have been deployed while verification of all service providers has been completed,” he added.

The LG said he wanted to assure everyone that good security arrangements have been made not only for pilgrims and tourists visiting Kashmir but the local populace as well.

Mr Sinha said while the pilgrims are welcome to travel by their private vehicles, they are requested to move along with the yatra convoy from Bhagwati Nagar base camp for better security.

He said for the comfort of the pilgrims, various steps have been taken over the past three years which includes widening of the track from four feet to 12 feet.

“The vulnerable spots have been secured by barriers…. the narrow tracks were a major cause of discomfort for the pilgrims,” he said.

The LG said the track is now motorable, right up to holy cave, but it would be used only in cases of emergency.

“The pilgrimage will go on as usual as in the past,” he added.

Mr Sinha said the feedback of the pilgrims has been positive and the steps taken by the administration and shrine board have been appreciated.

On the suspension of heliservices during the Amarnath yatra this year, Mr Sinha said the decision was taken in view of various factors including the recent mishaps in other states and security concerns.

“Moreover, only eight per cent pilgrims were using helicopter services for darshan,” he said.

  • 180 Central Police Force Companies Deployed For Amarnath Yatra: Jammu Police Chief

The 38-day-long yatra to 3,880-meter-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas is scheduled to start from the twin routes

A total of 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), which is 30 more than previous years, have been deployed for the security of annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu division this year, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, Bhim Sen Tuti assured a safe pilgrimage to every ‘yatri’ but appealed them to undertake the journey in official convoys if they plan to travel from Jammu rather than travelling independently.

The 38-day-long yatra to 3,880-meter-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas is scheduled to start from the twin routes — the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route in the Anantnag district and the 14-km shorter but steeper Baltal route in the Ganderbal district — on July 3.

The first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the start of the annual yatra.

“Police are alert to ensure the security of every (Amarnath) pilgrim. Five districts (Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Ramban) form a circuit through which the yatra passes (in Jammu region). The CAPF personnel have reached here and their total deployment is 180 companies which is 30 more than the last year,” the IGP said.

Talking to reporters after flagging off an anti-drug awareness tableau from district police lines on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here, he said they have increased the deployment from Lakhanpur in Kathua – the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir border Punjab to Jammu.

“We have also introduced Road Opening Patrols and also covered the area which used to have skeleton deployment in the past,” Tuti said.

The Jammu police chief said Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive region and the deployment has been made keeping the requirement in mind.

“My appeal to Amarnath pilgrims intending to plan their yatra from Jammu to join the official convoy rather than travelling independently to the valley,” the IGP said.

Two convoys traditionally leave Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu for Pahalgam and Baltal under tight security arrangements on a daily basis during the yatra period.

On the efforts to curb drug menace in the region, he said Jammu and Kashmir is a border state and “our fight is not only against terrorism but also narcotic business which is used to fund terror activities.”

  • Tight Security Arrangements Made For Amarnath Yatra: J&K Lt Governor

Mr Sinha performed the ‘Pratham Puja’ at the cave shrine, marking the ceremonial beginning of the annual yatra this year.

“The Pratham Puja was concluded. I request the devotees to come in large numbers for the yatra which will start on July 3 and conclude on Raksha Bandhan on August 9,” Mr Sinha said.

He said the Shrine Board and the administration have improved the facilities for the pilgrims this year.

“Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, CRPF, and other CAPFs have made foolproof security arrangements. So, I think there is no need for anyone to think about anything, they should come and take Baba’s blessings,” Mr Sinha added.

“Har Har Mahadev! Paid my obeisance to Baba Barfani and performed the ‘Pratham Puja’ at the Holy Cave, marking the ceremonial beginning of the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. May Baba Amarnathji keep showering his divine blessings on all of us,” the LG said on ‘X’ later.

He said the J-K administration, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, Army, BRO, CAPFs, J-K Police and all stakeholders are working with complete devotion, dedication, collaboration and clear objectives for hassle-free and safe pilgrimage.

“Invaluable contributions of people of J&K, Civil Society and all service providers have always been truly exceptional. I have full faith that significant improvements to facilities and services will ensure this year’s pilgrimage is memorable and spiritually fulfilling for all devotees,” he said.

Mr Sinha earlier conducted inspection of works for yatra at the Baltal axis of the pilgrimage.

He ascertained the progress of the works being carried out at the Disaster Management and Yatri Niwas Complex of Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board at Baltal axis in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir, an official spokesman said.

Mr Sinha directed the officials to timely complete the infrastructure projects being developed to enhance facilities for pilgrims of the yatra.

The 38-day yatra is scheduled to begin on July 3 from the twin axis of Baltal and Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district

  • Kolkata Campus Shock: TMC Denounces Student Leader After Rape Accusation

Admitting that the main accused is linked to its student wing, the party condemned attempts to politicise the issue.

After the rape of a law student in Kolkata triggered a political firestorm, the Trinamool Congress has admitted that the main accused is linked to the party’s student wing but insisted that this would not come in the way of him getting the strictest possible punishment.

The alleged gang rape of a law student from West Bengal’s Kolkata – months after the horrific RG Kar rape-murder case – has triggered a fresh and (furious) showdown between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Assembly election next year.

Three men – including Manojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student of the South Calcutta Law College -in Kolkata’s Kasba area – have been arrested and charged with rape. The other two men – Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, according to news agency ANI – are believed to be current students.

According to the police, mobile phones with videos of the rape – videos used to threaten and bully the 24-year-old survivor into staying silent about the attack – were seized from the accused.

A practicing lawyer, Mishra is the primary accused and the BJP – on the warpath with one eye firmly on the forthcoming election – has shared photographs showing him with senior leaders from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool, including her nephew and second-in-command Abhishek Banerjee.

The BJP has also raked up the RG Kar case to highlight the ‘sinking into lawlessness’.

BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari and the party’s IT chief, Amit Malviya posted images that seem to show Mishra standing next to Trinamool leaders including Abhishek Banerjee; Health Minister Chandrima

    The RG Kar Rape, Murder

This comes 10 months after a rape and murder at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The RG Kar case, as that came to be called, made national headlines for its brutality; the woman’s body was found in a seminar room on the college premises and the autopsy concluded she had been raped and possibly tortured – there were injuries to her genitals, the left leg and right hand, and face.

The cause of death was strangulation.

Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer for Kolkata Police, was arrested and convicted for the rape and murder of the woman, and was sentenced to life in prison, a punishment seen by many as lenient.

Many, including the family, had demanded the death sentence.

  • Astrology Jackpot: Horoscope Numbers Land Woman a ₹43 Lakh Win

A Maryland woman won $50,000 by using numbers from her horoscope to play the lottery and plans to keep manifesting bigger wins.

In an extraordinary stroke of luck, a woman from Laurel, Maryland, won a $50,000 (Rs 42,78,125) lottery prize after using numbers from her horoscope, . The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, told Maryland Lottery officials that she felt a strong intuition to play the numbers 25569 revealed to her through her daily horoscope.

Acting on her hunch, she purchased a Pick 5 ticket from the Sandy Spring Exxon located on Sandy Spring Road in Laurel. To her amazement, the numbers aligned perfectly, earning her a $50,000 windfall, according to UPI News.

“I had a hunch and followed it,” she told Maryland Lottery officials. “Pay my bills and save. I want to be responsible with it,” she added, sharing her plans to use the prize money wisely. But she’s not stopping there.

The lucky winner revealed that she’s already manifesting her next big win: “I’m manifesting $1 million. And you better believe I’ll be back to claim a bigger prize!”

This is not the only incident when somebody has won a huge amount in the lottery. A few days back a man from Washington County, Maryland, won $100,000 (about Rs 86 lakh) by sticking to his usual lottery strategy – buying scratch-off tickets in pairs. The lucky winner told Maryland Lottery officials he was tempted to break his habit when he spotted a $50 $5,000,000 Fortune ticket at Wooden Keg Liquors in Hagerstown.

The most I usually spend on a scratch-off is 20, but I decided to splurge,” he said. “The problem is that I always, always, always buy two of the same game. Every time.”

With 100 in hand, he followed his instinct and bought two tickets.

“I’d been thinking about it for a couple of days, so I was ready,” he said.

He won his money back on the first ticket, but it was the second that brought the real surprise.

“I kept uncovering 5,000 matches. There were so many of them. They just kept adding up,” he recalled.

The second ticket ended up winning him a total of $100,000.

“Any financial questions I had about my retirement were answered, with enough left over to share,” he added.
